James P. Vandergriff, Jr., 85, Neosho, died at 2:05 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Vandergriff was born Sept. 16, 1919, in Knoxville, Tenn., and moved to the area as a child. He served in the United States Infantry during World War II, served in the European Theatre and received the Purple Heart. He worked as a brick mason and was a member of the Neosho United Methodist Church.

James married Ada Lyster on April 11, 1941, in Seneca and she survives. Additional survivors include two sons, James Robert Vandergriff, Joplin, and Ronald L. Vandergriff, Neosho; two brothers, Ernest Vandergriff and Eugene Vandergriff, both of Neosho; two sisters, Bernice Johansen, of the state of Washington, and Helen Hill, of the state of California; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jack Vandergriff, in January 2004; and three brothers.
